Don’t worry. There will be no fantasy prose filled strained erotic metaphors today. Just a few ensembles that are literally shades of gray. Gray is my go-to neutral. I’m almost always looking to inject some sort of colour into my outfits. And while black can be a fantastic option, sometimes it feels very stark in contrast to the bold hues I tend to wear.

Grey has the same drama and versatility as black, but it’s a softer option. It’s also more forgiving if you spill something on yourself. That’s an important consideration for me.

Dress: Two (thrifted). Earrings: Forever 21. Purse: Vintage. Shoes: Aerosoles

I nabbed this mini-frock from a local thrift store at 50% off. Between this and the dress I bought at the vintage show, I’m having a full-fledged fling with pleated hemlines this fall!

Jacket: Jacob. Sweater and Jeans: Old Navy. Boots: Miz Mooz

I used to be afraid of mixing patterns. But that’s silly. The worst possible outcomes are clashing and possibly ugliness. And the best-case scenario might result in a get-up I really like. That was certainly the case here. Houndstooth and argyle: two of my favourite patterns are even better as a pair.  From now on, I’m saving my fear for real threats, like the zombie apocalypse.

Tunic: Jedzebel. Earrings: Zahara. Belt: Forever 21. Shoes: John Fluevog

Once again I’m wearing a tunic as a dress. As a dress it’s pretty short, short enough that I might not feel comfortable wearing it with bare legs. But my friend Amanda, who is wise in the way of fashion, reminded me that tights will ground a super-high hemline.

And speaking of Amanda, she’s wearing a dress every day this month to raise money for Save the Children and The Ottawa Snowsuit Fund. Check out her style here!

I’ve been losing weight.

Not deliberately and it hasn’t been much but I am a petite gal. It only takes a few pounds to make a noticeable difference. My clothes are starting to get baggy and a bit sloppy feeling, which is bothersome. Like many women, I’m susceptible to getting overly focused on my body. Not to mention all the nonsense about weight and self-worth. Ideally I’d like to let my body do her thing, accept the changes and get on with my life. But it’s hard not to feel self-conscious when I’m constantly aware of my clothes not fitting.

If my body decides to settle around this size, I’ll invest in some alternations. Meanwhile, I’ve found that tunic tops are a comfortable option while my figure is in flux. A garment that’s designed to be loose and flowing, feels much sexier than a body-hugging garment that’s gaping all over.

Tunic: Calvin Klein. Earrings and necklace: Forever 21. Jacket: Old Navy. Leggings: Lululemon. Shoes: Chinese Laundry

As always, vivid colours are a guaranteed cure for any body blues I might be experiencing. I am so smitten with this jacket and the vivid cobalt of the tunic is such a powerful, happy blue, I can’t help but feel happy when I’m wearing it!

Tunic: Smart Set. Earrings and Necklace: Forever 21. Leggings: Dynamite. Shoes: Payless

Another pro for tunics is that they emphasize the lower half.  So do leggings. So this outfit is works well for me since a) I quite like showing off my legs and b) my leggings still fit.

Tunic: Jedzebel Hat: San Diego Hat Co. Bracelet: Agora Jewelry. Boots: Dr. Scholls.

Oof…sorry about the blur.

Another great feature of tunics is that the longer ones can be belted and converted into mini-dresses. Hats are also a nice stable aspect of my wardrobe. My head size has remained consistent through all of my weight fluctuations…and several concussions!

Are there pieces in your wardrobe that help you dress through body changes? Is there a colour, pattern or style that makes you feel fabulous no matter what? How many concussions have you had? I always love reading your perspective, so feel free to chat away in the comments!

This week I feel sexy in…

Dress: H&M. Earrings: Ambiance San Francisco. Shoes: Seychelles.

Mini dresses!

Really short skirts are sexy. Definitely not the most original statement anyone has ever made. Now that I’m the latter half of my thirties, what is has been a bit of a fun challenge is finding wee fun dresses that still feel age-appropriate. These legs of mine are almost forty. I still enjoy letting them loose, but I’ve no desire to front like I’m a twenty year old.

Dress: Zara (thrifted). Shoes: Aldo (thrifted). Bag: Old Navy.

I’m not a very tall woman. Sometimes it’s a bummer but in this case being a shorty worked out wonderfully. This dress is actually a top I picked up at the recent clothing swap. Her original owner is a couple of inches taller than I. What fit as a tunic on her works much better as fun mini-dress for me. The shoes are the beloved Mary Janes I thrifted awhile back. I’m definitely developing a strong taste for the economy of new-to-me duds.

Dress: via eBay. Shoes: thrifted. Purse: H&M.

All right. This get up is a bit of a stretch. Literally. It’s a stretchy polyester sheath covered in sequins. I’d typically wear this as part of a burlesque getup, but this time I reappropriated it into a 1960′s type costume for the recent Vintage Cocktail Party at the Billing’s Estate. Again, the shoes were a thrift find…and what a find. Not only did the match the dress, but those lucite heels were sturdy. Good thing since the night involved lots of dancing and a late night hike to a nearby cemetary

What was that I said about being age-appropriate?

Cheers to my party peeps, pictured below! Here’s to our next night out.

The Man of Mans, Rusty, Wayne, Ruthanne and Sterling toast you with vintage cocktails!

The Insight Theatre gala is a little more than a week away, which means long days of work that stretch into long nights of work, a little sleep and then up and back at it in the morning.

There have been a few breaks to do fun things like host a Victoria Day hang out and have my picture taken by Ottawa’s favourite photog, Justin Van Leeuwen. But I haven’t taken the time to document any outfits. It’s probably for the best. For the most part I’ve been dressing in whatever clothes I find on the floor by my bed. I may have accidentally worn the same tank top three days in a row.

Long story short, I’m neither looking nor feeling especially sexy this week. But that doesn’t mean you should suffer.  So here, from my Fashion Porn Pinboard, are some high stylin’ looks that may be out of my real-life price range, but are wardrobe staples in my fantasy life.

Vivenne Westwood Plaid Day Dress

Worn in the opening credit montage of Adorkable Undies – my new hit TV show!  This dress is featured in a brief clip of me hailing a cab with my clutch purse. And what is Adorkable Undies the television show about? The same things as this blog – sex, relationships and me falling down a lot.

Burberry London Gaberdine Trenchcoat

Worn en route to my feature interview for Bust Magazine. When the editors set up the appointment they tell my assistant “We’ll do the interview at a restaurant of Nadine’s choosing. Cost is not an issue. Wherever she likes, we’ll cover the tab.” My assistant  relays the message and I’m suddenly overcome by the pressure of choosing a fabulous luch place. Hastily, I blurt out the first place that comes to mind. That’s why I’m headed to the Bridgehead in Hintonburg. Still, I’m gonna make the magazine buy me TWO ginger cookies.

Like a boss.

Tadashi Shoji Black Lace Gown

Worn to opening night of the Metropolitan Opera. As soon as I step out of the limo, the paparazzi’s flashbulbs go wild. I wave and smile brightly, buoyed by my apparent awesomeness.  The press LOVE me tonight! As I make my way into Lincoln Center, Kate Winslet pulls me aside and whispers, “You have toilet paper stuck to your shoe, love!”

Cynthia Rowley Multicoloured Dress

Worn during my appearance on The Colbert Report with Ultimate Secret Boyfriend Stephen Colbert. Our on air-discussion is quick witted…and fraught with sexual tension! After the show, I mention my love of karaoke. “What a coincidence. I love karaoke as well,” Stephen tells me.We head to a little-know New York City spot where the crowds are sparse and the rotation is short. We laugh, share a plate of spicy fries and sing a heartfelt rendition of The Doobie Brother’s Black Water.  Suddenly, The Man of Mans walks in. He and Steve make out.

Best day ever!

Alberta Feretti Beaded Tulle Cocktail Dress

Worn at my New Year’s Eve Party. Guest arrive at my kick-ass, 6-bedroom, party house in Sausalito, California. They are served sparkling champagne and green licorice appetizers. The main course is cupcakes. The music is funky, the dancing goes all night and my shoes are roller skates. You are all there with me and I must say, y’all look GOOD!

Do you have any fashion fantasies? What celebrity would you like your partner to make-out with?

This week I feel sexy in…

Earrings: Ambiance San Francisco. Sweater: Old Navy. Dress: Smart Set (thrifted). Shoes: Seychelles

…fun, flirty, FLORALS!

Apparently April showers DO bring May flowers. At least in my closet. The thick hoodies and bulky sweaters are giving way to sundresses and t-shirts.  I generally  avoid florals in my winter wear. The colours are darker, the material is heavier and the effect can be overwhelming on a petite frame like mine.  Also? Floral knitwear makes me feel like I’m wearing rug hook.

I do love flowers in spring but I’m ass at gardening. So I’ll happily settle for wearing pretty, light-weight clothes covered in colourful blooms.

Earrings: RW & Co. Dress: Thrifted. Belt: Thrifted. Bracelet: Thrifted. Shoes: Aldo (Thrifted)

This dress is so sweet and diaphonous. I thought it’d been fun to kit it out with some hard, metallic accessories.

Like last week’s featured look from Les Prix Rideau Awards, this outfit is almost entirely pre-loved. The shoes are the beloved purple Mary Janes I found earlier this year. The belt and cuffs came from my favourite neighbourhood thrift store. The dress is my most recent score, purchased at an amazing vintage shop in downtown Fort Myers, Florida.

Earrings: Forever 21. Shirt: Threadless Ts. Skirt: Ann Taylor Loft (via eBay). Shoes: CL Laundry.

This skirt is one of those wardrobe misfits that doesn’t work with most of my winter tops and I find too warm for summer.  That leaves spring and fall, which are fleeting seasons ’round these parts, so I probably only wear this a couple times a year.  I won’t get rid of it, though. I love the shape, I love the colour and you can’t see it in the photo but the tweedy fabric has little dots of colour woven into to it. Delightful!

May is my favourite month! I love the weather and the promise of the summer to come. In Ottawa, funly times abound with The Tulip Festival, The Great Glebe Garage Sale, Ottawa Race Weekend and my favourite stat holiday – Victoria Day!

And didja know? May is also Masturbation Month! Brings new meaning to the expression “spring has sprung”. :-)

Jump!

This week I feel sexy in…

Cardigan: Smart Set. Earrings: Forever 21. Blouse: Gap. Jeans: Old Navy. Shoes: Anne Klein.

Cardigans!

I know, I know. Cardigans are the wardrobe staple of preppy New England blue bloods and soccer moms. They aren’t SEXY.  But hear me out.

It’s early spring, which in Ottawa means unpredictable temperatures that fluctuate quite a bit from dawn ’til dusk. Cardigans provide a layer of warmth, that can be easily removed as the day warms but they’re a tad more body conscious than a big bulky coat.

Besides, who amongst us doesn’t indulged in a little soccer mom-themed role play?

Anyway…

I’ve been wanting a yellow cardigan for a dog’s age!  But lately every option I found was too boxy, to heavy or a shade that made me look like I had died.  During our vacation, I made a trip to the local outlet mall where I found this:

Cardigan: Gap Outlet. Scarf: H&M. Necklace: Gifted from my mom. Dress: Old Navy. Leggings: Lululemon. Shoes: Payless.

It’s the perfect shape, the colour works with my skin tone and best of all, it was on sale for a mere $15 bucks. A good cardigan is hard to find, so I picked up a few in different colours.

I dig the look of a belted cardigan. This open front, shawl-style sweater is a perfect candidate, as it’s longer, lighter weight and doesn’t have any buttons or other fastners to get in the way of the belt.

Cardigan: Jacob. Beret: eBay. Belt:Joe Fresh (thrifted). Leggings: Dynamite. Shoes: Payless.

I’m  having spring fling with yellow this year. It’s a more challenging colour for my skin tone than pink, but I am smitten with the hues that invoke images of fresh lemons, buttercups and other summertime things. Will my mellow yellow crush develop into long-term love? Only time will tell.

I’m a big believer in tailoring and bringing my clothes in to be nipped, tucked, hemmed and otherwise adjusted has become standard practice. I’ve never considered bringing an accessory to my tailor…until now. This scarf is lovely, but it’s looong. The wind picks up and suddenly I’m entwined in fabric tentacles!

This week I feel sexy…

Dress: ASOS (thrifted). Shoes: Feet First

and thrifty in these second-hand scores!

Until this past year, I rarely thrifted. Not because I have anything against previously-loved duds, but because the prospect of hunting through racks and racks and RACKS of randomness to unearth those hidden gems kind of scared me. Have you been to Value Village? That place is huge, yo!

Then one afternoon I was on the shop for a new dress to wear for a night of dancing. When I couldn’t find anything at Old Navy my usual retail haunts, I made a last-ditch stop at AMH Style, a consignment shop in my ‘hood. The small boutique meant a more managable selection. I found sexy little number that was perfect for boogie. It was good quality, in great condition and I landed that shizz for fifteen dollars!

Why hadn’t I been thrifting all along?

Small consignment stores are a great way for thrifting neophytes to ease themselves into second-hand shopping. The selection is smaller and they seem stock more current styles than department thrift stores.

After a few good consignment experiences, I felt brave enough to try my luck at Value Village.  The challenge of Value Village, at least for me, is that my style is fairly contemporary and their stock spans a multitude of eras.  When I scan the store as a whole the merchandise looks very dated to me.

The great thing about The Village? The price points are outstanding. I’ve rarely paid more than ten dollars for an item of clothing. And the current stuff? It’s there — you just have to do some digging. I paid $6 for this sundress and only $1 for the fun silver belt!

Dress: Audrey Mai (thrifted) Shoes: Ambiance (gift fromThe Man of Mans)

One of my favourite things about the low cost of thrifting is that I’m more likely try items I’d otherwise refuse.  I’m nuts for the bubbly print on this dress. When I tried it on at the store, I wasn’t *entirely* sure I loved the rest of it, but it had potential. For $18 dollars I was willing to take it home, play with some accessories and give it a chance to shine.

I added the red shoes and suddenly I have a dress that I like a LOT! I may invest in a little tailoring and hemming down the line. I have plenty of cash left over for the alterations.

This is me tossing my hair and trying *very hard* to be sexy.  Mostly it just looks like I’ve been invisible bitch-slapped.

This week I’m putting my money where my tagline line is.

Shoes: Chinese Laundry. Sweater: Aerie. Earrings: Forever 21.

Pants off. Shoes ON!

My recent visit to see Lisa, included a marathon of day shopping. We dropped mad cash all over town, but the majority of my greenbacks were spend at the glorious Discount Shoe Warehouse.

“I want ALL the shoes!” I declared upon entering. However, I don’t have ALL the money (and word is they frown on shoplifting down south) so I pared my selection down to three favourites,  all of which are sure to be in heavy rotation this season.

I’ve always enjoyed shoes, but it’s only very recently that I’ve ventured away from my usual choice of basic black, grey or token pop-of-colour colour, red. Apparently my typical love of colour and pattern stopped at the ankle. Technicolour footwear intimidated me in the past.   ‘When would I ever wear a shoe like that?’ I’d ask myself.

But there’s a time and a place for splashy footwear.  I’m sure I can figure out how to execute these pretties  And at low, low warehouse prices this seemed like to perfect opportunity to test the waters.

I’m also a recent convert to the wedge. At 5’4″ I’m not tiny, but I enjoy having the option of adding another couple of inches to my height if I so choose. Wedges serve both my desire to stand tall and my need for comfort very nicely. It’s come to my attention that some folks have very strong feelings for and against the wedge. Which side of the debate are you on?

FYI, it was my mom who first asked me to do a post featuring my new shoes. Which inspired me to pose pantsless on a table. Guess I know what I’ll be discussing at my next visit to the shrink.

Time to get off the table and onto the couch!

This is the story of Nadine and the Amazing Lemon Coloured Dreamcoat…

Headscarf and bracelet: Forever 21. Boots: Miz Mooz.

When I saw this coat, it was love at first sight! It was eight years ago and I was thumbing through the pages of InStyle magazine when I came across a multi-page spread advertising Banana Republic’s Spring ’04 collection. This zesty town coat was the first garment featured and oh, did I swoon!  The colour! The shape! The HOUNDSTOOTH!

Dress: Ambiance. Earrings: Forever 21. Tights: Foot Traffic Hat: Gifted

Banana Republic is slightly higher-end retailer with higher-end price points to match. These were my early career years when I made significantly less than the little money I make now. But such was my passion for the coat that I promptly paid a visit to the Republic to get up close and personal with the object of my desire.

When I got there it was even more beautiful than I had imagined! I looked at the price tag…$350!! Light years beyond my struggling artist coat budget! Dag, darn and drat! I decided to put the coat on, hoping against hope that once it was on my body it would look terrible, thus allowing me to walk away and forget all about this unaffordable madness!

Of course, it fit perfectly.

I briefly considered using a tactic I’d used when I was five – standing near the coat, looking forlorn in the hopes that some rich benefactor would take notice and buy it for me out of pity.  Except that had never worked. If I couldn’t score a pity gift as a cherubic 5-year-old, I had no hope as a decidedly less cute 28-year-old.  I put the coat back on rack and walked away with great difficultly.  I went home and resolved to save my pennies.

Headscarf: Forever 21. Tunic: Smart Set. Leggings: Dynamite. Pendant: via eBay.

Save I did. I saved all through that spring, summer and by September I had enough money to buy my dreamcoat. But fashion is fickle and though the leafs were turning yellow, Banana Republic’s coat collection had turned to black, burnt umbers and dark blues. The houndstooth coat had long sold out in Ottawa. I called stores in Toronto and Montreal, but the tale was the same. No coat for me.

I was terribly disappointed and sadder than I should have been considering this was a coat and not my kidney. I reminded myself that there would be other coats and sooner or later, one would come along that I loved just as much. Sure enough I have owned some great coats in the intervening years. But none that I’ve loved as much.

Tank: Gap. Jeans: Old Navy. Bracelet: Forever 21.

Earlier this year I was going through my closet. I noticed my old spring coat was looking a little the worse for wear, so I decided it was time that I retired it. I knew I still had tons of time before I would need a new one, so I created an eBay search in the hopes that something appealing would pop up before the milder weather kicked in.

The very next day I received an e-mail with a long list of coats that fit my criteria. And there at the very top of the list, in my size, in perfect condition, was a Banana Republic Yellow Houndstooth Coat!!!

For fifty dollars.

Needless to say, I snapped it up as fast as my fingers could click “Buy It Now.” It came in the mail a week later.  I carefully removed it from it’s shipping box, unfolded it and put it on. It was exactly as I remembered it!  Lemon-y houndstooth perfection and hands down the best coat I’ve ever had!

This week I feel sexy in…

Coat: Suzy Sheir (gifted). Sweater: Thrifted. Jeans: Old Navy. Boots: Miz Mooz.

…Lightweight coats.

My winter parka is warm, cozy and an effective barrier artic winds. It’s also fug-LY. I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m not a winter person. Though my trusty North Face coat is an unsightly blob of thermoregulatory nylon, it allows me to venture outdoors without dying of hypothermia, so I accept this function-over-fashion state of affairs.

This week the mercury did a turbo jump. The past couple of days have been springtime mild. I’m not sucker enough to believe that winter has come to an end…it is Ottawa after all. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I’ve taken advantage of this balmy reprieve to trot out some of ligher, sleeker, decidedly sexier outerwear.

Coat: Banana Republic (via eBay). T-shirt: Threadless Ts. Jeans: The Gap. Boots: Miz Mooz

This picture was actually taken a few weeks ago. I was playing around in my closet and got the idea for this ensemble, so I asked The Man of Mans to snap a photo for future reference.  People, the future is now! I resurrected this outfit and wore it this week. The Banana Republic jacket is one of my wardrobe darlings – soon to be featured in it’s own Fashion Friday post.  I can’t wait to get more use out of it as spring progresses.

Coat: Land's End. Tights: Sock Dreams. Shoes: Aerosoles

I’d been hunting for the perfect rain coat for over two years, when I found this snappy number on the Land’s End website last year. It had every element I wanted: trench style; detachable hood; a classic pattern in a super-fun colour.  Needless to say, I snatched it up immediately.  I love, love, LOVE this coat, so much so that I’ve become a fan of wet, rainy days.

Fashion Friday photos are a family affair. The Man of Mans is the photographer, I’m the model and The Green Bean is the stealthy talent waiting for his moment to jump in and steal the show!

Did someone say "Be a tiger!"
