    Not cli-TOR-is/deLORes

#1. The #2 pronunciation always makes me giggle. I had a high school boyfriend who liked to talk dirty to me, and whenever he said cli-TOR-is, it was all I could do not to laugh in his face and ruin the mood. :)

  7. caitlin says:

#1 for sure. #2 always seems a bit odd to me, and I’ve never heard anyone say #3.

  8. Jodie Layne says:

I say 2, but have been slowly trying to transition to 1. I have always always heard 2 until the last year when I really got into sex education.

  9. none of the above. i say “clit.” i would only use #2 in a limerick. there once was a wanker named Boris…

I looked up the original ancient Greek word, which is accented like #3! Bonus: the neighboring dictionary entry gave a related verb meaning “to touch the clitoris.” Awesome. Learn something new every day. I believe the English form would be “to clitorize.” I clitorized myself this morning!

I’m not sure I’ve ever said the word clitoris out loud in its full form. I always say “clit” because I never really need to say it outside of casual situations, and using words for genitalia with lots of syllables can sound more than a little geeky. In high school, I always assumed it was pronounced like #2, but later I started listening to podcasts that pronounced it like #1, so I’ve never been super sure which was correct, if there is, in fact, a consensus.
